THE COMPETITION


The U.S. Department of Energy selected twenty universities around the world to design and build a solar powered home to be displayed on the National Mall in our nation’s capital as part of the 2011 Solar Decathlon!

Team FIU is one of the twenty teams going to Washington D.C. to compete in the Solar Decathlon.

To win, the house must:

  • - be powered exclusively by the sun
  • - be affordable, attractive, and easy to live in
  • - maintain comfortable and healthy indoor environmental conditions
  • - supply sufficient energy for cooking, cleaning, and entertainment
  • - provide adequate hot water
  • - produce as much or more energy than it consumes

Our CHALLENGE

Team FIU is representing Florida International University which is located in Miami, Florida. Once our perFORM[D]ance House is built it will be transported 1,056 miles in the back of the trucks from Miami to the National Mall. The perFORM[D]ance house is designed to be easily disassembled and reassembled for this reason.
